Dear moms, climate change is not your fault!

Moms are tired.

As any mother will tell you, exhaustion is part of the job — it’s part of what we signed up for when we decided to have children. We take on a lot for our kids, happily. When we get fired up about something we want to act. And often we are faced with external challenges out of our control that can make us feel helpless.

How many moms out there feel guilty that they’re not doing enough to help fight climate change? I believe most of us would raise our hands while at the same time wondering what the heck we’re supposed to be doing.

The number one action that mothers can take is to demand common sense solutions to tackle climate change from our leaders. All of us can support immediate action by the government to address global warming.

I try my best to recycle because that’s what I’ve been told is important (even though in many cases trash gets collected and the plastic and pizza boxes end up in a landfill.) I try not to buy too many clothes that aren’t sustainably made, yet when I try to find such clothes they’re so expensive that I sometimes end up buying my kids’ clothes from the big box stores anyway. So of course, then I feel guilty about my life choices, and throw my hands up and go back to my day.

I experience crushing guilt and anxiety over simply have kids due to the current climate crisis. I’m fearful for what my kids lives will look like as adults. Major. Major. Guilt. Unfortunately, I can’t fix this alone.

On top of that, we are busy. With the pandemic leaving many of us juggling work, homework, cleaning, cooking, and just about everything else, a lot of moms are not sure where to go or who to talk to.

I don’t know about you, but there are so many mixed messages on the internet that many of us don’t know what’s real and what’s a deliberate disinformation attack. That leaves us feeling helpless, scared, and confused. Sometimes, we read that it’s just too late to do anything about it and that we’re just going to have to learn how to live on a hotter planet.

But when we look to our elected politicians for leadership, their frequent support of policies and polluters that have a negative impact on our Earth send yet another conflicting message.

The administration has accelerated its push to deregulate in the weeks before the election, to ease requirements on power plants that leak waste into waterways, weaken efficiency standards for dishwashers, scale back oversight of mine safety and approve seismic drilling in an Alaska wildlife refuge.

So where do we go when we need quick facts and figures that we can use in our daily lives? And really now, who is to blame? We can only figure out how to solve the climate crisis if we understand who the big polluters are.

It turns out there are a bunch of moms out there dedicated to making it as easy as possible for us to understand the importance of fighting for a livable climate and providing the information we need to easily take action.

Enter Science Moms. A nonpartisan group of mothers, who work in climate science, and who are concerned about the future of their own kids.  These moms are making it their singular goal to ensure that our children have a sustainable future.

These Science Moms have set out to help other mothers communicate their concerns about the condition of the planet our children are inheriting.

Climate change is settled science. There is a 99% consensus among scientists that climate change is real and caused by carbon pollution—but for many of us, it is unclear what we can do as individuals.

As it turns out, the most powerful action we can take is to demand common-sense solutions from our elected representatives to address climate change. This problem is bigger than any one of us. Together, we must put pressure on those who can make a big, sweeping change.
