So let us begin anew — remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate. Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us. — John F. Kennedy
Biden won the debate battle last night by reminding the nation that our country is not about a red state versus a blue state, it is about the United States.
Early in the evening, it became evident that Trump wants to open up the country not because he cares about people, but because he is concerned about one thing: the economy. Coronavirus be damned! Ezra Klein tweeted it best, “Imagine if Trump cared about coronavirus as much as he cares about Joe Biden’s son.”
Money makes the world go around, I guess. Trump’s total disregard for humans and his singular focus on Wall Street showed us exactly who he is. Give Trump two minutes and he ends up meandering down a path to nowhere except the one that ends with a pot of gold.
National Security
The candidates took on national security and foreign affairs with Biden stating that any country that interferes in American sovereignty will pay a price. He also asked Trump why he hasn’t been more outspoken about Russia’s meddling. What a good question. Why hasn’t Trump told Putin to stay out of our elections? Trump responded by saying that “no one has been tougher on Russia.” He kept repeating the false statement that Russia has been paying the Biden family millions of dollars. Biden said again that he has never taken money from any foreign source. And Biden reminded Trump that while he has released ALL of his tax returns, Trump still has not.
Meanwhile, our president claims he’s been so mistreated by the IRS… Really?? All we want is for you to release YOUR tax returns!
With regards to Ukraine, Biden TOOK IT ON. He stated that it was Trump who bribed the Ukrainian government to say bad things about Biden. What many people thought would be a big story night was over before it even started. But what about those emails?
Healthcare
The healthcare debate was predictable. Trump was unclear about his plan AGAIN. Biden had a plan and reiterated that he doesn’t support banning private healthcare. Biden stated that healthcare is not a privilege, but a human right. He asked the American public to decide if Trump has actually done anything about healthcare these past four years. I think we can agree, whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, that Trump has not articulated a clear plan at all since he took office.
Biden pointed out that the stock market is Trump’s only measure of how well this country is doing. FINALLY, Biden stepped up to the plate and said what’s on all our minds: Trump only cares about MONEY.
The border
Trump lost the plot when after being asked about the 545 kids whose parents still can’t be found said, “Those kids are being so well taken care of.” WTF KIND OF STATEMENT WAS THAT? Trump then talked about how Obama had built the cages and how these kids had come over with cartels and gangs.
Biden responded with a firm NO, they had come with their parents, and that the Trump administration had ripped these kids from the arms of their parents. Pete Buttigieg tweeted, “This exchange on family separation is all you need to see to understand the difference between these two. A clear, moral message from Joe Biden. Noise, insults, and denial from Donald Trump.”
Black Lives Matter
The issue of race also took center stage with Trump saying that no one has done more for the African American community than Trump. Another lie. Meanwhile, Biden laid out a plan. I think all Americans hung their heads in shame after listening to Trump talk about his position on Black Lives Matter.
Climate change
“Climate change is an existential threat to humanity”, according to Biden, who sounded the alarm and said that we don’t have much time to save the planet. Trump said we have the cleanest air and the most crystal clear water EVER. When it finally came to Trump and his statement about windmills, I realized Biden was clearly the victor
The debate was won on one issue: Humanity. Trump showed that he is a soulless, callous, mean-spirited excuse of a human. As Markos Moulitsas said on Twitter, “Trump can’t even pretend to care about orphaned children.” Biden admitted the mistakes of the past and laid out a plan for how he intends to heal the country.
Biden is an American president. Trump is the president of money. Biden recognizes that we have a lot of work to do. Trump wants you to believe that he has it under control.
We have 11 days left to save our democracy. GOTV.
Psst…Don’t forget to watch the viral ad, We Count, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons, about why our vote counts, and why we need to chill the “f**k” out and wait for all votes to be counted. Watch it here and then SHARE widely.
