When a small child, wanders off in a mall and is separated from his or her parents, it is terrifying for the parent and child. Multiply that feeling by 545, and we have a veritable catastrophe on your hands.

The situation isn’t hypothetical. Lawyers have not been able to reach the parents of 545 children who were separated from their families by Trump’s border officials between 2017 and 2018.

“Even before Covid, it was hard enough finding these families but we will not stop until we’ve found every one. Some of these children have been separated for years and were just babies at the time.” — ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt.

How many tears have already been shed?

Heroes like Kevin Ryan are trying to fix something they didn’t break.

The pain is immeasurable. Families and children may never recover. And those already miraculously re-united may have already suffered irreparable damage.

Who knows how high the number really is

We may never know. Not only are the parents affected, but so are the siblings. Just imagine having your little brother or sister disappear. For years.

There may be nothing worse.

Immigrants come to America in the hope of a better life. They come from countries torn apart by war, climate change, and other things.

These families have suffered immensely before they arrive on our shores — it is the reason why they arrive on our shores.

This is the nadir of humanity. We owe everybody a lot more. A minimum of decency. Right now we’re not even close to that.
