In a chilling expose, comments and actions from Trump revealed by unnamed sources from the White House showed his disrespect for members of the military who have fallen in action.

The story published in The Atlantic was so shocking and stomach-churning that former Vice President Joe Biden released a statement saying, “if what is written in the Atlantic is true, it’s disgusting and it affirms what most of us believe to be true — that Donald Trump is not fit to do the job of president, be the commander-in-chief. If these statements are true, the president should humbly apologize to every Gold Star mother and father and every Blue Star family that he’s denigrated.”

Senator Tammy Duckworth, a military veteran who had lost both of her legs in a helicopter crash in the Iraq war, stated that Trump “insulted war heroes, he’s attacked Gold Star families and he’s even tried to politicize and pervert our own military to stroke his own ego.”

Of course, Trump turned to the only defense he knows how to use: lies. He tweeted: “The Atlantic Magazine is dying, like most magazines, so they make up a fake story in order to gain some relevance. Story already refuted, but this is what we are up against. Just like the Fake Dossier. You fight and fight, and then people realize it was a total fraud!”

The sources cited in The Atlantic said that Trump canceled a trip to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery because he was concerned that his hair would get messed up in the rain.

But he made sure no one knew that. He claimed that the rain prevented the helicopter from flying. Trump also tried to make it seem as if the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him to the cemetery.

‘Full of losers’

According to four sources who were there, Trump said “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” (Even a Fox News host confirmed Trump’s statements, much to his ire.) The cemetery was full of 1,800 marines who lost their lives in 1918, at the battle at Belleau Wood in World War I.

The battle was fought to stop the Germans from advancing on Paris towards the very end of the war. But of course, more than a hundred years later, Trump could not be bothered to offer some respect.

‘That loser’s funeral’

Trump’s complete disrespect for veterans extended to the late Senator John McCain, who died in 2018. The Atlantic reported that Trump told unnamed sources, “We’re not going to support that loser’s funeral.” He also questioned why the flags were flying at half-mast, saying “What the fuck are we doing that for? Guy was a fucking loser.”

This aligns with past comments from Trump in 2015 about McCain, when he said, “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

‘I don’t get it’

In 2017, when Trump visited the Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, he visited the grave of Robert Kelly, the son of John Kelly, the then secretary of homeland security.

While standing at the grave of Robert Kelly, who was killed in 2010 in Afghanistan, Trump turned to the others and said, “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?”

A friend of Kelly said to The Atlantic, “Trump can’t imagine anyone else’s pain. That’s why he would say this to the father of a fallen marine on Memorial Day in the cemetery where he’s buried.”

Vietnam vets were ‘losers’

The Washington Post wrote that some sources verified that Trump has referred to Vietnam veterans as “losers.” Given that in the past, he has said that avoiding sexually transmitted diseases as his “personal Vietnam,” it’s hard to tell what his priorities are, other than selfish.

Trump also avoided serving in the Vietnam War, claiming that he had medical conditions preventing him from service.

Dissolving ‘Stars and Stripes’

In a memo released on the same day as the report, the president and the Pentagon announced that the military publication Stars and Stripes was going to be defunded. A few hours later, Trump tweeted that the decision was reversed, but the damage was already done.

Stars and Stripes has been a publication meant for the members of the armed services for over a hundred years.

Fallen soldier ‘knew what he signed up for’

As Trump denies the comments reported, it’s important to look back at other comments he’s made on the record when it comes to members of the military. In 2017, Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David T. Johnson, said that Trump couldn’t even remember her husband’s name.

Trump told her that Johnson “knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyway.” She told ABC that the president’s words only made her cry.

More disrespect

In 2016, the parents of Captain Humayun Khan, who died in a car bombing in 2004, spoke at the DNC convention. Trump reacted, saying, “If you look at his wife, she was standing there, she had nothing to say, she probably — maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say, you tell me.”

He also said, “I’d like to hear his wife say something.”

When you add up all of these comments that he has said publically over the years, is it really that hard to believe the things The Atlantic claims he made in private?
